For 30 years, students from all over
West Virginia have been dropping pumpkins off of the WVU Engineering Science
Building. Why are they dropping pumpkins off a roof, you might ask? For a good
cause! Each team that enters to drop one of their pumpkins must pay $10 and the
entry fee money is donated to the Ronald McDonald House Charity (RMHC) of
Morgantown. This year, 300 teams from more than 100 schools participated in the
event.
The
goal is for the team to drop the pumpkin as close as possible to the target
below without it breaking when it hits the ground. The teams could use whatever
materials they wanted. Each team came up with creative ways to protect their
pumpkin. Some of the creative ways to keep their pumpkins safe included
mattresses, marshmallows and a pillow. The winners of the competition were the
members of team 102-A from the Greater Beckley Christian School. The team went
home with a $100 prize.
Many
different companies and organizations work tirelessly every year to raise money
for RMHC in an effort to do their part in supporting those who need it. These
companies and organizations use a wide variety of different ways to raise money
including sports tournaments, food drives and pairing with large corporate
sponsors. RMHC utilizes the funds given to them to help families in need who
have sick children in the hospital and need a place to stay. Their mission is
to keep families and children together and provide the support that families
need while they are working through a tough period in their lives. We need to
step up and continue to support this great foundation and its wonderful
volunteers! As the holiday season draws nearer, it is the perfect time to give
the gift of caring to a family that needs some extra cheer. Let this holiday
season be the time of giving instead of getting!!
